USA SPORT CLIMBING AND SPEED CLIMBING NATIONALS

Last weekend climbers from around the USA joined at Mesa Rim Reno for the USA Climbing Sport and Speed Nationals.  There were over 150 competitors ready to share their passion and strive for a place on the podium.

Overall the event brings a good reminder that the sport of climbing is first and foremost a social and friendly competition field. You can feel the family spirit amongst competitors and coaches. As athletes come out and to get a preview of the routes, they work together to visualize the problem in front of them. During the competition they cheer for each other, they support one another, they offer compassion when needed and give credit where its due.  The sport of climbing is all inclusive and ready to accept everyone lead by humble and approachable professional athletes.

After the first round of qualifying, the field was limited to 20 female and 20 male athletes per discipline. Semi-finals brought the field down to 8 athletes in each category for finals. You could see athletes improving in multiple disciplines. More US climbers are progressing at Speed Climbing and gaining a better all-around style. Arguably because the Olympics will only hand out medals for combined scores in 3 disciplines. Athletes will compete for an overall score in Bouldering, Sport and Speed. Topping that list over the weekend was Claire Buhrfeind from Team Texas, as she took 1st place in both Sport and Speed and John Brosler setting a new National Record in Speed Climbing!

EP is proud to be involved in building these facilities.  We completed Mesa Rim Reno back in August of 2017. It was fun visiting this facility during an event that was part of the initial planning and design. We work endlessly with route setters and owners to design and build on a tradition of quality to create the best climbing spaces for everyone.  Get training, keep climbing and most of all, enjoy the voyage and meet new people along the way.
